As they say in Star Wars, you need to “feel the Force.” Of course, we’re talking about a different type of force here. We’re talking about the force that you need to apply on your pedal to stop your vehicle. Here are some things to look out for:
1. When you press the pedal, does it feel like Sponge Bob is stuck in there? Like it feels like you’re stepping on foam? If it does feel that way, then you might have air bubbles on the brake lines. You need to flush the brake fluid and replace it with a fresh batch.
2. Does the brake pedal have a love affair with the floor? Does it like to kiss the carpet when you step on it? This might indicate that pressure in the fluid is escaping somewhere. You might have a bad master brake cylinder, not enough fluid or leaking brake hoses.
3. If you need to pump the brakes as if you’re putting up an inflatable pool before your car can stop, then you might not have enough brake fluid. Check for the fluid levels. If all seems fine, then check for leaks on the brake lines.
4. If your car is wobbly, or if you hear your brakes scream when you stop, you may have faded brake shoes or brake linings. Have them checked and replaced immediately. You can also do a check on your shock absorbers for good measure.
And so, feel the brakes. If you’re having some of these symptoms, then it might be time for a brake checkup.
